Me Say ^_^: KOMTEP 2018 – Kelarai Hanbok / Boo Chae Class

This is actually a part of my Project Plan. Initial plan was to do the weaving of kelarai, but since their class period is only 40 mins each, I decided to do the kelarai by coloring instead, much easier & faster.

I also differentiate the outcome for upper and lower grades which are :

1. Hanbok for upper grades
2. Boo chae (hand fan) for lower grades

Clearly this is to cater their different level of abilities & skills. As for the execution, heres how I use the 40 mins :

1.    Introduction – 10 mins
2.    Coloring – 15 mins
3.    Hanbok / Boo Chae making – 15 mins

Lets break it down a little bit more..

INTRODUCTION : To introduce what is Kelarai, where could they be found, Kelarai names and pattern, literally all the theories and such. I did them in trilingual; asking them to guess things shown in pictures, giving them answers in trilingual and also translating Malay words into English (kelarai names) and ask them to guess what are they in Korean.

COLORING : This is somewhat a method I call color by grids; pupils are given paper with numbered grids randomly and asked to color the grids using 2 different colors according to the numbers. Once they finished coloring and forming the kelarai pattern, they would have to guess the name of the kelarai.

I try to minimize the word used in those slides as possible

HANBOK / BOO CHAE MAKING : For this part, I guide them step by step using picture slides and of course demonstrating it myself in front of the class. Its really crucial to go around the class to check on everyone to make sure they could follow my instructions.
